Roderick Road receives planning permission

The first of our two projects on Roderick Road in Hampstead has received planning permission. The project involves some complex access and privacy issues relating to neighbours above and adjacent. This required a number of design options to be explored and consultations with neighbours and planners to come to a successful outcome. We are thrilled to be able to progress to the detail design stage and to construction later in the year.

Beadon Road submitted for planning

We’ve been working on designs for an extension to a large detached house in Bromley since the end of last year. The interwar built house has some interesting arts and crafts style details and beautifully proportioned rooms. However, the garden elevation is currently a confused collection of additions and changes that demands a complete reworking. Our proposal seeks to do this with a timber framed extension that includes an extended pergola / canopy to ‘wrap’ the existing poor quality additions.

New project in Gillingham

Garden Street is a fascinating 4 storey house thought to date from the early 19th century, though with elements that could well be older. We are developing options for an internal reworking that will respond sensitively to the historic fabric while modernising the house and opening up the dark lower ground floor in particular.

We have been asked by Civic Engineers to work up plans for the expansion of their London studio. Located in Reeds Wharf, a Grade II listed former warehouse on the River Thames, the studios have spectacular view to Tower Bridge and the city. The expansion will result in new and reconfigured space over 3 floors and totalling about 500 sqm / 5,400 sqft.

Welcoming Aisha for work experience

We welcomed Aisha, a Sheffield University Architecture student, this month to provide work experience over the next few weeks. We are doing this remotely and meeting occasionally in our socially distanced office, adapting to our times. Paul mentored Aisha in the final months of her second year and it is great to continue to help further her experience of the profession.

Planning success in Kent

Our project in Staplehurst, Kent, has received planning permission. A pitched roof extension with a ‘twist’, the proposal is designed to connect to the house to the large garden as much as possible. The a simple pitched roof form is rotated to maximise the views along the garden and the internal volume, while also being modestly scaled at the boundary.

Remote teaching with Sheffield Hallam University students

Adapting to lockdown continues, to successful homeworking we can now add remote tutoring. Paul recently did a series of technical design sessions with 3rd year degree students on the Sheffield Hallam Interior Architecture course. It was great to see the positivity of the students as they work toward the end of their studies in extraordinary circumstances.

Adapting to COVID 19 and lockdown

We have closed our office and moved to home working during these unprecedented times. Our systems have allowed us to do this with minimum inconvienience and we continue to work on our projects unaffected. We have already carried out a numbe of virtual meetings, design sessions and site visits. How this will change the way we work long term will be fascinating. We wish everyone well.

Sketch ideas for Roderick Road, Hampstead

A new project with some unusual and challenging requirements, Roderick Road is a ground floor 2 bed flat in a double fronted mid terrace house. The existing plan has many confusing level changes and poor living space. We’re enjoying exploring a wide range of ideas to extend and reconfigure the flat and working closely with the client to determine the best way forward.

Nightingale Lane complete

Our house extension and refurbishment project at Nightingale Lane, Bromley, is complete. We visited recently and were thrilled to receive positive feedback from the client and take some photos of the interior. The use of corten steel cladding outside means we need to wait a few months for that to rust before its ready for a professional photo shoot!

New project in Catford

We have begun work on a new project to extend and refurbish a detached house in Catford, Lewisham. The original house dates from the early 1800s and has been extended a number of times, with many layers of history apparent. Contributing to this evolution of a home promises to be a fascinating process.

Mentoring students from University of East London

Robin has begun mentoring two second year degree students from the University of East London. The programme aims to help students learn about the profession and practice whilst completing their studies. We think it is a great idea and are glad to be involved and add it to the work we do with the University of Sheffield and the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.
