Bromley Nursery

A project to create an exemplary children’s nursery and event space within a Grade II listed church in Bromley.

The First Church of Christ Scientist was built in 1928 in the then rapidly expanding London suburb of Bromley. The beautiful and imposing building operated as a church until the 1990s, since when it has been without a regular use. Our client wishes to convert the building to create a nursery for up to 100 children. The nursery will establish new levels of service and quality for nurseries in Bromley, including facilities for visiting special needs children. The building will also provide a flexible space for events, classes and community functions within the original nave.

The design responded sensitively to the listed building, the external appearance and the nave and entrance vestibule being of particular quality. The three main nursery spaces, one for each age group, will be housed within the nave. The design is being developed to be adaptable and flexible, such that the nave can be returned to a large open space for events.

Conibere Phillips was appointed in October 2018 to undertake a feasibility study.
